Last week I had the pleasure of interviewing Neil Bartlett about his latest theatrical project, Stella.
There’s plenty to intrigue here – the piece is based on the life of the Victorian cross-dresser also known as Ernest Boulton, and as half of Fanny and Stella. And (as part of LIFT festival) the production is coming to Hoxton Hall, whose music-hall form speaks to a heritage of performance without a fourth wall.
I was particularly taken with Bartlett’s assertion of the value of creating work that “adds to the available stock of queer reality”.
